Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I live in a Homeowners Association. Do I need special approval?
A: Yes. As the homeowner are the only person(s) who can obtain the approval from your HOA. Clean Sweep will be happy to provide any necessary information needed (e.g. rock type, plant material list, permit requirements, Clean Sweep license information, etc.) This approval must be obtained prior to the onset of any work.
Q: How do I turn on the gas valves and /or service after the installation of my fire pit or BBQ?
A: You have a choice! We can hook up your gas lines for a service call fee or as the homeowner; you can call, email or visit their web site - SouthWest Gas (702-365-1555) for a free service call. Please note that only the homeowner can call for a Southwest Gas hook up.
Q: Can you explain the proper watering schedules and restrictions?
A: For more information, visit the official website for the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
Q: What is a Pre-Lien?
A: In accordance with NRS 108.246 of the NV Revised Statutes, this is a Notice to the Owner(s) and/or Contractor(s) of materials supplied, work or services preformed. This is NOT a lien, this is a notice REQUIRED BY LAW.
Q: What do I do if my plants/trees are dying or are dead?
A: Follow your warranty. This states that Clean Sweep will not respond to a dead list. What this means is you as the homeowner must inform us prior to the plant/tree dying. This gives Clean Sweep the opportunity to be proactive and to treat and/or correct the cause. Loss of plant material is usually a secondary reaction to an underlying situation, most of which can be prevented by professional intervention.
Q: Will Clean Sweep seasonally notify me to change and update my irrigation clock schedules?
A: Controlling your irrigation clock will be your responsibility. You will be educated during your final walk-thru on how to properly operate your irrigation clock. You will also find further information at the official website for the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Please note the first year of your new landscape installation will require additional watering.
Q: What are the liabilities to pet damage?
A: Your Limited Warranty states that the homeowner accepts responsibility for damage caused by pets or to any materials.

Watering Schedule

The number one culprit for dead or dying plant material is improper watering. To prevent this, get to know your soil type and learn the proper amount of watering time required to achieve optimum soil moisture depths.

Sod

If Outside Temperature is:
50-70 Degrees-Water every other day for 10-15 minutes
70-80 Degrees-Water once a day for 10-15 minutes
80-100 Degrees-Water twice a day for 10-15 minutes

Optimum soil moisture depths for sod are 6" to 8" below surface.

The first four weeks after installation is a critical period for new sod or seeded lawns. It is very important to keep it moist at all times. Be sure to schedule the final watering no later than one hour before sunset. Leaving lawns wet overnight promotes fungal diseases.

Drip System

15 to 60 minutes on designated plant valves
1 hour to 5 hours on designated tree valves
15 to 60 minutes for plants and trees on same valve

Optimum soil moisture depths for small to medium shrubs is 12" TO 18"
Optimum soil moisture depths for large shrubs to trees are 18" to 36"
WATER FROM 9AM TO 4PM.

The amount of watering time depends on the type of soil in your landscape. Be sure to use proper cycle & soaking methods especially in areas with high runoff potential.

Watering less than 3 times per week during the first four weeks after installation can result in distress and drying out of root ball or root zone of your plant material. The amount of watering per day should rarely be adjusted as it is your goal to reach optimum soil moisture depths. Changes to your watering schedule after the initial installation period should reflect the current season, temperatures, and the type of plant material in your landscape.

If outside temperatures are above 95 degrees, schedule your drip system as late in the morning as possible for maximum soil moisture in the hot afternoon hours.Take a look at the Southern Nevada Water Authority website for further details that may affect your watering schedule.

Proper Cycle and Soaking Methods

If your landscape area has steep slopes or heavy clay soils, it is especially important to implement proper cycle & soaking schedules. To find the proper schedule, simply divide your total watering time into 2 to 4 start times. Start times should be scheduled within 1 ? to 2 hours of each other. This pushes the previous watering deeper to achieve your optimum soil moisture depth.

Fertilization

*Please note that fertilizing in summer months is likely to cause plants to burn. We recommend fertilizing in the spring & fall months for the best results. Be sure to spread fertilizer around root ball PALM TREES (Bare Root)

"It is important to leave your bare root palm trees tied for a minimum of six weeks during summer months. If trees are planted between October and March, they should remain tied until April. It is normal to see tied fronds brown-out. As long as the center heart stays green your tree will recover.

Specialty palm fertilizer is recommended during the months of April to September. Fertilizing in the winter months is not recommended as it promotes new growth that can be damaged by the cold.

Plants

"When installed, plants will have the necessary vitamins, minerals and amendments to promote healthy growth and will be planted at ground level. If a drip line is installed we will double check to make sure that each plant is receiving the right amount of water. This will not only save water, it will also prevent water damage to concrete, walls surrounding structures. This system is ideal for plants, flowers, and garden areas.

"Proper tree development is vital during the first 3 to 5 years to produce a well developed mature tree. Be sure that your gardener or tree service professionalis executing proper tree care. No more than 25 % of the tree canopy should be removed within a 1 year period. Trees should be "off the stakes" 2 years after planting & proper pruning techniques should always be utilized. All major tree pruning should be performed during the late fall and winter months. Spring pruning can be extremely harmful to trees. Sap starts to flow heavily in the spring creating opportunity for the slipping of bark and is an open invitation for pests and disease.

Installed plants come with a 120 day Limited Warranty

Irrigation

"Lawn irrigation - As your lawn matures, the grade will rise. To aide in this process, we use strong ? to 1 inch Schedule 40 pipe & adjustable lawn head risers. These materials make it easier for you to re-adjust any lawn heads without having to cut into the system. We use Hunter, or Rainbird pop-up lawn heads and all trenching for irrigation systems are 8 inches deep with the sprinkler heads even with the ground. You can rest assured the pressure vacuum breaker (PVB)valve will be up to code on mainline sprinklers.

" Drip irrigation - We use Y filters to prevent micro particles from clogging emitters and we use pressure regulators to reduce the chance of emitters popping off due to pressure changes in the water supply. Top quality "?" poly drip lines are buried below grade to prevent surface damage caused by rock mulch and foot traffic. Pressure compensating emitters are used with the gallons per hour rating best suited for the plant materials.

All installed plumbing comes with a one year Limited Warranty.

Soil

"We use 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches minimum of top quality lawn mix. This amount of soil will save you from having to water as much and gives you better drainage for root growth. The deeper the roots grow the less water you need.

Plant materials are provided with 15 to 30 % blend of organic mulch to promote a healthy soil environment for your new plants and trees. Organic matter improves the moisture retaining capacity of soils by as much as 500%. Non organic mulches are used when planting cacti and succulents. Their native environment is very low in organic matter and use of organic mulches with cactus promotes decay and imminent death.

Sod

"When it comes to evergreen sod selections in the Las Vegas valley, tall fescue sod is preferred. It is drought and heat tolerant. Hybrid Bermudas are also available in seed or sod. Bermuda grass is more water efficient than fescue, but it is invasive and may spread into your other landscape areas. Bermuda grass goes dormant in the winter, which you can over-seed with rye to keep green.

How to:

• Irrigation problems

In the event of an irrigation leak, turn off the valve on your PVB. This will stop the water supply to your irrigation system and stop the leak. Shutting off this valve will not affect the water supply to your home. If you are still under warranty contact our office as soon as possible.

• Light Transformers and Outdoor Timers

Adjusting your transformers & timers is as easy as setting a clock. All you need to do is set the red and black pins to your preferred schedule. The Black pin controls your start time and set the Red pin controls the shut off time. Remember to specify the appropriate am and pm settings.

• Irrigation Clocks

Depending on the type of clock you have the instruction on how to set it should be on the door inside. If you are having any problems with this please contact our office.

• Putting Greens/Synthetic Turf Lawns

Your Putting Green/Synthetic Turf may be low-maintenance, but some maintenance is still needed. Your turf and fringe area need to be swept periodically with a push broom to stand up the fibers. Doing so on a warm day will add ease to this task. Your may use a yard blower or broom to remove any debris from your putting green/turf. If you get any grass or weed growth simply spray it with Roundup Weed & Grass Killer.

• Waterfall and Pond Maintenance

Waterfalls & Ponds Without Fish – Bromine tabs are helpful with keeping algae growth down. Depending on the waterfall/pond size, use about 1-5 tablets on the bottom of the pond. Allowing the pond to run routinely throughout the day will assure less algae problems. If the rock material in the waterfall/pond discolors, use a high power hose or un-iodized salt to wash it off. If you choose to use the un-iodized salt method of cleaning your waterfall/pond, simply shut waterfall off, sprinkle salt over algae stained rocks and let it stand in the sun for an afternoon. Follow up by spraying rocks off with a hose and remove dried algae with a net.

Waterfalls & Ponds With Koi Fish – It is normal to have some algae in your pond. This is part of the biological cycle we achieve when we add fish and aquatic plants. Stringy algae or Blanket Weed is normal. Fish don't mind this type of growth, because it offers them protection, food and spawning media. It is most prevalent in the winter when your other aquatic plants are dormant. Dormant plants do not use the nitrates in the water, thus giving the algae more nourishment to grow on. Introducing a natural bacterium that will consume the nitrates will help to eliminate String Algae. Also, to slow algae growth you can salt the pond water at a ratio of 1 pound per 100 gallons; you may also use Superbugs that are available at Nevada water gardens

• When do I stop feeding my fish in the fall?

We recommend you stop feeding your fish when the water temperature reaches 50 degrees. The main reason to stop feeding your fish at that point is the fact that the metabolic rate of fish slows down so much in cold water that it is possible the food will spoil in their digestive track before it passes through. This may cause the fish to die. Should the fish get hungry, there is plenty of food in a natural pond.

• How often do I need to fertilize my lilies?

For maximum bloom production, we recommend fertilizing Tropical Lilies twice a month and Hardy Lilies once a month during the months of April through October.

Regarding all installed foliage: It is important to perform a “Walk-Thru” to assess plant material every few days after installation. There are many factors involved in plant loss, most of which can be prevented by professional intervention. If you contact Clean Sweep with a concern, we will respond in a timely manner. However, we WILL NOT respond to a “dead list”. At this point we are no longer in a position to salvage the material and cannot assess the reason for loss. Without a reason for loss, Clean Sweep cannot be held responsible for foliage replacement.

Regarding Concrete Structure, Masonry & Concrete Curbing: Spider-web cracking, Hairline cracking, freezing and pinholes are naturally occurring events inherent to working with concrete. The concrete industry has standards, which generally find these things acceptable; therefore they are not covered in this warranty. Clean Sweep is not responsible for variation in color when matching existing Concrete Structure, Masonry, Pavers or Concrete Curbing.

Due to hard water deposits and the nature and composition of soils in the greater Las Vegas area, any landscape area requiring watering will cause delaminating and effervescing of topping products as well as sealers. Clean Sweep shall not be held liable for surfaces popping, effervescing and delaminating where these conditions exist. Clean Sweep is not responsible for movement of concrete, soil, or wood structures, or salt and/ or mineral conditions of soil below concrete surface. Salt and/ or minerals can leach through concrete causing erosion of concrete coating.

This warranty is limited to the replacement of materials. To obtain service under this warranty, the homeowner must contact the company either by mail or by calling the number listed on the Proposal & Contract. After inspection, if it is determined that warranty service is necessary, Clean Sweep will perform such service at a time agreed upon between the company and the homeowner at the time of inspection. Clean Sweep does not warranty foliage based on visual appearance or dormancy. Plant material must be completely dead for this warranty to apply. This Limited Warranty is nontransferable.
